Hand-Lettering and Alter-Egos
September 23, 2013
In the past week, I've been working on my hand-lettering while the baby (i.e the baby I nanny sleeps; I do not have a baby––I repeat, I do not have a baby) sleeps. Yes, I'm a nanny by day and a blogger/illustrator/curator/whatchumacallit by night. I like to call myself a baby nanny. Not to be confused with a baby mama.
Since I'm not a calligrapher extraordinary, I look to some of my favorite fonts to gain inspirations on what ways to curve those characters, dot those "i's" and cross the "t's". You can find some of my favorite font collections on my Pinterest board, "Darling Design."
Working on something like this may appear tedious, but I find it to be great fun. Sometimes I wish I had different handwriting alter-ego's, like characters that an actress has played on a tv shows for years so she knows the role inside and out. She can just switch into that role in the drop of a hat––be someone else for the day. Wouldn't it be cool to write like someone else for the day?
I wish that some days I wrote like an old doctor––you know the chicken scratch that is barely legible on prescription forms––and that the next day I could instantaneously mimic the script of Marilyn Monroe's autograph. I've never seen Ms. Monroe's autograph, but I'm sure it was bubbly and beautiful and full of swoops and swirls.
Now this whole handwriting alter ego thing is starting to sound like being a con-artist or a stalker.
Weird.
Anyways, hand-lettering practice means new cards in the works! For now, you can check out the cards currently in the shop (hey, even show a friend or two... or buy one for a friend... or two!).
If you have any custom requests, I'll take it and see what I can do! I love custom requests (and generally custom cards cost the same as general cards. Bam.). Email me (oakandsunset [at] gmail [dot] com). Let's make magic, together. Swoops and swirls (or arrows and squares for the more masculine types) and all.
